How to do a new moon water ritual
Most rituals ask for things you do not have in the cupboard. This one asks for a glass of water and the courage to write down what you want.
The new moon is the dark start of the lunar month, when the Moon and the Sun line up and the Moon is invisible from Earth. It has long been treated as a time for beginnings: you plant an intention in the dark and watch what grows over the next four weeks. Water is a natural partner, because it takes the shape of whatever holds it.
What you need
- A clear glass or jar. Glass is better than plastic; you want to see the water.
- Fresh drinking water.
- A small piece of paper and a pen.
- Ten minutes, on the evening of the new moon or the following night.
Check the exact time of the new moon for your time zone. You do not need to do the ritual at the minute it happens. Anywhere within a day after is fine.
Step by step
1. Clear a small space. A windowsill, a bedside table, the corner of the kitchen. Remove what does not belong there. This takes one minute and it matters more than it sounds.
2. Write one intention. Use the present tense and keep it to one sentence. "I go to bed before eleven." "I ask for the rate I am worth." "I make time for the people I love." If you find yourself writing a paragraph, choose the sentence that made you hesitate.
3. Fill the glass. Pour the water slowly and hold the glass in both hands for a moment. Read your sentence out loud.
4. Set the glass on the paper. Leave it overnight where you will see it before you sleep and when you wake.
5. Drink it in the morning. Slowly, before your phone. Read the sentence once more.
6. Keep the paper. Fold it and put it somewhere private. Take it out at the full moon, two weeks later, and see what has moved.
Variations
- Add the sign. Each new moon happens in a zodiac sign, and the sign suggests a theme. A new moon in Taurus is good for money and routines; in Gemini, for conversations and study; in Libra, for relationships. Our monthly posts give the theme for each one.
- A pinch of salt in a separate bowl beside the glass, for people who like a cleansing element. Do not drink that one.
- A shared version. Two people, two glasses, two sentences, read to each other. It is a surprisingly good way to talk about what you each want.
- No drinking. If you prefer, pour the water onto a plant in the morning instead. The intention goes into something that grows.
Why it works, in plain terms
A ritual is a way of paying attention on purpose. Writing a single sentence forces you to choose. Seeing the glass that night and the next morning means you meet the intention twice before the day gets loud. Returning to the paper at the full moon builds in a check-in, which is where most intentions quietly die.
None of this promises an outcome. It makes it more likely that you will notice the chance when it comes.
Common questions
Do I need to put the glass in moonlight? No. At the new moon there is no moonlight to speak of. Put it wherever you will see it.
Can I do it on a different day? Yes. The day of the new moon and the two days after are traditional, but a sincere intention on a Wednesday is better than none.
What if nothing happens? Look again at the sentence. Was it something you can act on? Intentions about your own behaviour tend to move faster than intentions about other people.
New Moon in Libra: a ritual for October 10
The October new moon falls at 17° Libra while Venus, Libra’s ruler, is retrograde. A month for repairing agreements rather than rushing new ones.
Full Moon in Taurus: what to release on October 26
The Taurus full moon lands just after midnight Eastern on October 26, in a tight square to Pluto, with Venus and Mercury both retrograde. A night to let go of what you hold on to out of habit.
