New Moon in Libra: a ritual for October 10

· VESTA Editorial · 2 min read

The new moon arrives on Saturday, October 10, 2026 at 11:50 a.m. Eastern (8:50 a.m. Pacific, 4:50 p.m. in London), at 17°21′ Libra. The Sun and Moon line up, the Moon goes dark, and a new lunar month begins.

Libra is the sign of the scales. It cares about fairness, about how two people meet in the middle, and about the agreements we live inside without always noticing them: who cooks, who calls first, who carries the money worry, who says sorry.

What makes this one different

Libra is ruled by Venus, and Venus has been retrograde in Scorpio since October 3. It stays retrograde until mid-November. When the ruler of a new moon is moving backward, the fresh start tends to point at something old. This is less a month for brand-new relationships and more a month for looking honestly at the ones you already have.

There is also a wide, friendly sextile from Jupiter in Leo. Generosity helps. So does a little warmth where you would normally keep score.

What to set an intention about

Pick one relationship, at home or at work, where the balance feels off. Not the whole map of your life, just one. Then ask:

  • What do I give here that I would like to give less of?
  • What do I need here that I have not asked for?
  • What would fair actually look like, in one sentence?

Write the answer down plainly. "I want to stop being the one who always plans" is a better intention than "I want harmony."

The ritual: new-moon water

You need a clear glass, fresh water, a pen and a small piece of paper.

  1. In the evening of October 10, write your intention on the paper in the present tense: "I ask for what I need in this relationship."
  2. Fill the glass and set it on top of the paper, somewhere you will see it before bed. A windowsill is good; moonlight is not required on a new moon.
  3. Sit with it for a minute. Read the sentence once out loud.
  4. In the morning, drink the water slowly and read the line again. Fold the paper and keep it until the full moon on October 26.

If you want the longer version, with variations, we wrote a full guide to the new moon water ritual.

What to do in the two weeks after

  • Have one even-handed conversation. Not a confrontation. A real question, asked kindly.
  • Revisit before you replace. Venus retrograde favours repair: an old friendship, a stalled negotiation, a promise you made to yourself.
  • Notice where you keep the peace at your own expense. That is the work of this lunation.

What to avoid

Do not agree to things just to end an awkward silence. Do not start a new relationship or sign a big shared contract on impulse while Venus is retrograde; wait until it turns direct and see if you still want it. And do not try to fix everyone else's balance. Libra season asks you to stand in the middle, not carry both sides.

The full moon in Taurus on October 26 will show you what this intention has stirred up. Keep the paper.
